"Imaginative and daring." -THE NEW YORKER

New York vocalist Kendra Shank performs music from her newest album HALF MOON -- recorded live in New York with pianist Geoffrey Keezer. Hailed as "exceptional" and "impressive" in a 4-star DownBeat review, the CD was named "Best Vocal Jazz Album" by the Ottawa Citizen and Jazz History Online. "Shank, a vocalist of imaginative latitude, has found a duo soul mate in the veteran pianist Keezer... Investigating worthy, under-the-radar material (including work by such jazz luminaries as Abbey Lincoln and Cedar Walton), Shank and Keezer find mutual inspiration in intuitive surprise" says The New Yorker. "Considering her distinctive phrasing alone, Shank is a maverick interpreter who can seemingly turn a song on its head but have the evolution make perfect sense." (Rick Mason, City Pages).

Kendra Shank
Kendra Shank's seven critically acclaimed CDs have won numerous “Best of the Year” citations and DownBeat poll recognition, with accolades for her "delectable voice" (Time magazine) and "breathtakingly original concept" (Boston Globe). Her music career began at age 19, busking in Parisian subways and cafés as a folk singer-guitarist. 11 years later her passion turned to jazz and she studied with Jay Clayton while honing her craft in Seattle and Paris jazz clubs. She soon caught the attention of Shirley Horn who co-produced Shank's debut CD and presented her at New York's Village Vanguard in 1992. Since moving to New York in 1997 Shank has become a prominent figure on the city's jazz scene, headlining at The Blue Note, Birdland, Jazz Standard, and Iridium, and featured on NPR's JazzSet and Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz. She has toured in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Canada and the U.S. with festival appearances at JVC Jazz; Freihofer’s Saratoga Jazz; Jazz Port Townsend; Jazz à Vienne; Jazz in Marciac; Wangaratta Jazz; Calgary Jazz; and Edmonton Jazz, as well as concert halls and clubs. In addition to leading her NY quartet of 16 years with Frank Kimbrough, Dean Johnson, and Tony Moreno, Shank has performed and/or recorded with Abbey Lincoln, Fred Hersch, Geoffrey Keezer, Larry Willis, Joe Locke, Bob Dorough, Jay Clayton, Gary Bartz, Steve Wilson, Victor Lewis, Matt Wilson, Ben Monder, John Stowell and many more. Kendra Shank's mix of modern jazz, standards, world music, folk/pop, and open improvisation is unified by her soulful storytelling, inventive phrasing, and spontaneous group interplay.
